Developmental models which might be applied to emerging sexuality & the challenges & risks that may be associated with different sexual orientations & identities are reviewed. The models are: cumulative events or simultaneous change, accentuation, or trajectory models. Inclusion of risk & protective factors & the balance between these elements is discussed in terms of predicting mental health outcome. These models relate to the understanding of suicide risk during adolescence. (37 refs.)
