This study compared the social correlates of suicide in Italy & the USA. 7 social indicators were analyzed: population, population density, unemployment rates, marriage rates, birth rates, death rates, & the proportion of the population 65 years or older. The social correlates of suicide were found to be quite different for each country. For example, in Italy suicide rates were lower in regions where marriage & birth rates were higher; the opposite was true for the USA. (4 refs.)
