The identification & treatment of psychiatric problems such as affective, conduct & substance-use disorders is currently the most effective form of youth suicide intervention. This article addresses family physicians who have young patients & discusses demographics, suicidal behavior, attempted suicide, risk factors for completed suicide, prediction, prevention & management of suicide, assessment, mental status examinations, family interviews, disposition, & follow-up.
