The purpose of this article is to assist in the recruitment of not only an adequate supply of volunteers to work on hotlines, but to assist in the selection of volunteers who will be caring & compassionate in fulfilling the human service mandate of the hotline. It examines volunteer motivations, the nature of the work, the relationship of the volunteer to the caller, definitions of caring, & how caring is exhibited during a call.
