This literature overview article provides data on jail & prison suicides, examines precipitating factors & jail environment & operating factors which contribute to suicidal behavior, & discusses the manipulative inmate & the use of isolation. The author notes that prison suicide must be viewed in the context of a process by which an inmate is (or becomes) ill-equipped to handle the common stressors of confinement. (19 Refs.)
