Cyclic antidepressant overdose is the leading cause of death from drug overdose in patients arriving at the emergency room. Factors which contribute to the significant morbidity & mortality associated with this type of overdose include prescribing cyclic antidepressants to patients at increased risk of attempted suicide. This paper uses the case history of a 45-year-old male to demonstrate the current approach to the patient with significant cyclic antidepressant toxicity. (45 refs.)
