The incidence of alcoholism & 175 associated psychopathological disorders was compared between 100 neuropsychiatric patients in Germany & 101 psychiatric & medical patients in Nigeria. Depressive psychosis & suicidal ideation was seen in 17.8% of cases in Jos (Nigeria) & in 5.0% of cases in Castrop-Rauxel (Germany). The pattern of alcoholism in Jos was associated more with gradual personality deterioration rather than the more frequent delirium tremens found in Castrop-Rauxel. (5 refs.)
