The success of traditional suicide prevention efforts is reviewed & found wanting. Prevention strategies at the primary, secondary & tertiary levels are discussed. However, encouraging recent developments are noted. It is suggested that suicidologists might profitably consider the strategies used by professionals dealing with other public health problems, such as drug abuse & delinquency. (56 refs.)
