In an epidemiological study, 14 suicides among current patients of a London psychiatric unit were examined. Analysis showed a discrete cluster of suicides; however, there was no evidence of a direct linkage between the suicides. 13 of the patients suffered from severe, chronic mental illness. 12 used violent methods. Although no definite cause could be established, the cluster coincided with a period of uncertainty concerning the future of the hospital & with staff changes & absences. (31 refs.)
