Extending an earlier theory by Tarde, Kral argues that suicide is merely an idea having more in common with societal beliefs & norms regarding things such as divorce. Supporting evidence is discussed based on what has been learned from studies of history, culture, contagion phenomenon, media coverage & choice of methods. It is suggested that certain individuals are more vulnerable to incorporating the idea & act of suicide into their self-concept in the same way that ideas are spread in society.
