This chapter provides data on visits by suicidal patients to a general practitioner just prior to an attempt, noting that few talk about their suicidal thoughts. This paper was given at The Netherlands conference when WHO/EURO study results were released. It explores signs & signals related to suicidal behavior & depression; assessment of risk; crisis intervention; general practitioner attitudes; practitioner/patient communication problems; & role of the practitioner after a suicide or attempt.
