Implications for the Management of Suicide Attempters in General Hospitals (IN: Attempted Suicide in Europe: Findings From the Multicentre Study on Parasuicide…, edited by A J F M Kerkhof et al)
Hengeveld M W
This chapter, given as a paper at the 1993 conference in The Netherlands when findings of the WHO/EURO Multicentre Study on Parasuicide were presented, notes that 40-60% of the suicide attempters who present to general hospitals are repeaters. For the clinician, sociodemographic aspects are only part of a complicated interplay of biopsychosocial factors in recurrent suicidal behavior. The paper notes that major repeaters seem to stay major repeaters irrespective of clinical efforts.
