By using estimated mid-year populations for five-year age bands, the suicide rates for 10-14 year olds & 15-19 year olds were calculated for 1960-90. The same method was used to obtain rates for undetermined deaths & accidental deaths by causes comparable to suicide. The only group to show an increase in suicide rate since the 1970s was males aged 15-19. This increase persists even when undetermined & accidental deaths are examined. The increase may indicate increased psychosocial stress.
