The epidemiology of suicide in the Ukraine is presented. The highest rates were in the area of the Chernobyl disaster & highly industrialized areas, although overall suicide rates are higher in the country than in the cities. Suicides were 3 times more frequent among males. Adolescents under 19 accounted for 14.2% of all suicides. The most frequent methods were hanging & jumping from high places. Very few people will consult a psychiatrist & there is widespread distrust of telephone counselling.
