Conwell reviews the literature on the difference between urban & rural suicide rates among elderly Japanese. Suicide rates are substantially higher among Japanese elders who live in traditional, multigenerational families compared to those who live in nuclear families. Changes in household composition, social values & economic status are important variables to study, but other factors such as access to & utilization of mental health services must be considered.
