Research findings on HIV-associated dementia are reviewed & the pattern of cognitive changes characteristic of this disorder are discussed. Screening for cognitive impairment is suggested. Practical, educational & clinical considerations of providing clinical interventions for HIV-related dementia are described. Clinicians need to assist patients in dealing with cognitive changes & limitations, & assess depression & suicidal tendencies which can encroach on patients already impaired cognition.
