For the period 1950-1985, years with higher marriage & birth rates had lower suicide rates in general in 29 nations for which data were available. Results provide support for Durkheim’s theory of suicide & indicate that the theory may have cross-cultural generality. Results also showed that the impact of marriage rates was stronger than the impact of birth rates. (7 refs.)
