Major increases took place in Canadian suicide rates in the 1960s & 1970s. While it has levelled out, the rate of suicide in Canada in the 1980s is still the highest in Canadian history. A federal Task Force report published in 1987 showed a marked increase in suicide in the 15-19 age group, most significantly among males. This paper suggests reasons for this increase, & describes some prevention programs.
