This article examines data & trends of suicides by children (aged 5-14). Children often display unique characteristics related to their developmental stage (eg. understanding that death is permanent, the lethality of some activities). Mood disorders figure prominently as a suicidal symptom. Research results indicate childhood suicidal behavior persists as children get older & may be associated with social consequences. A box insert with the article highlights how to help the suicidal adolescent.
