This chapter focuses on the development & evaluation of telephone-based crisis centres whose primary activity is suicide prevention. The evidence regarding the effectiveness of such programs in reducing suicide rates is mixed. Many programs do not measure up to the recommended standards for prevention programs. The Precede-Proceed model of health promotion program planning & evaluation is presented as a tested conceptual framework for furthering the work of suicide prevention. (30 refs.)
