A descriptive & retrospective investigation of 204 cases of youth suicide (age 24 & less) in Manitoba between 1984-88 was done. The study found a high male to female ratio, a large number of younger adolescents & a suicide rate in the Native population 10 times that of non-Natives. The method of suicide varied by gender & ethnic group. Depression & substance abuse were identified as risk factors. A number of recommendations on data gathering, prevention & intervention are proposed. (25 refs.)
