A model is presented in which alcohol use across the continuum of consumption is conceptualized as having a reciprocal relationship with environmental stressors. The influence of the stressors is viewed as being exacerbated at increasing levels of alcohol involvement. The resulting myopic effect of alcohol consumption may lead to an increased focus on the stressful conditions and, in the presence of suicidal ideation, is hypothesized to lead to suicidal behaviour.
