The authors describe a 3-year research project, the purpose of which is to gather more data on at-risk behaviours in rural youth & to assist professionals with training & supportive materials to prevent these behaviours. Preliminary findings show that rural youth are more likely to use marijuana & alcohol than are urban youth in runaway shelters. No significant difference was found between the groups in a history of suicide & suicide attempts, but rural youth did have poorer self images.
