The perception that Indians frequently commit suicide in correctional settings is common throughout Indian & non-Indian areas. However, obtaining actual Indian/Native data is difficult. This paper begins to address issues regarding suicidal behaviour among Indian jail detainees, the on-reservation detention environment, hindrances to collecting data within the environment, current developments, & recommendations for continued basic & applied research in this unique treatment arena.
