Coping With Distress and Self Harm: the Impact of a Primary Prevention Program Among Adolescents

The program was primarily based on cognitive-behavioural modification principles, procedures, & techniques. It consisted of 7 units passed during 12 weekly 1-hour sessions. 237 Grade 8 students were randomly assigned to experimental & control conditions. Overall assessment of effectiveness: the program had a positive effect on attitudes, emotions, knowledge, & awareness of distress-coping skills. It had some degree of face validity & social validity from the students’ vantage point. (64 refs.)
