Records of suicides in some Indiana counties from 1984-92 were reviewed. There were 14 cases in which armed, on-duty police officers were confronting, pursuing or apprehending the subject of the death investigation. All subjects were male & the peak age range was 30-34 years. More than half the incidents started as domestic disputes. Ethanol was involved in less than half of these cases, & drugs were not a factor. In at least 4 cases the police presence was a precipitating factor in the suicide.
