517 outpatients (New York nonprofit hospital) completed self-rating forms & interviews. Characteristics of patients with & without a history of homicidal behavior were compared. The rate of outpatient homicide attempts was considerably lower than reported rates of assault among inpatients. The relationship between past & current episodes of aggressive behavior reinforces the importance of carefully assessing the history of violent behaviors as part of routine psychiatric evaluation.
