Partial gastrectomy for benign ulcer disease may influence future risk of death. Records of 6459 Swedish patients, operated on from 1950-58 & followed through 1985 were analyzed. Risk of death from psychiatric disorders was increased. Mortality was significantly increased from suicides & accidental injuries, posssibly due to lower socioeconomic status or alcohol abuse. An earlier study found that 50% of the suicides after a Billroth II operation for a duodenal ulcer, were alcoholics. (25 refs.)
