This chapter starts by defining terms which include: hopelessness, depression, manic behaviour, and suicide. The chapter then discusses the following issues: the psychopathy of major depression and bipolar disorders as described in the DSM-III-R; historical perspectives and theories of hope and hopelessness; the application of the nursing process to clients who have feelings of hope and hopelessness; and then identifies current research findings on the topic.
