Styron, the author of this article, suffered from major depression for many years. In this article he relates some of his own experiences including suicidal ideation. He then discusses the case of Vincent Foster, a high-ranking Washington official who completed suicide. Styron believes that Foster also was suffering from a major depression & that it was this condition, more than the events in Washington, that precipitated Foster’s suicide.
