The prevalence and selected correlates of self-injurious behaviour (SIB) were examined in inmates referred for treatment to a maximum security forensic hospital and in two comparison groups. Two distinct patterns of SIB were identified. Different therapeutic strategies are outlined to respond effectively to these etiologically different patterns of SIB. (18 refs.)
