Re-examination of data reported by Bongar et al (1990) showed that in a sample of 24 suicidal patients, a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder was associated with the number of recent self-mutilations but not with the number of lifetime suicide attempts. However, the number of prior suicide attempts was associated with the number of recent self-mutilations. Controls for sex & age did not change these associations. The present analysis confirms Bongar et al’s observations. (2 refs.)
