This paper reviews the evidence on what factors mediate both suicide & parasuicide. Sociodemographic & psychiatric factors which may affect vulnerability are examined. Vulnerability rises when these variables are combined with psychological factors leading to poor problem solving. Primary care agencies are taught to be vigilant for signs & symptoms of depression which may affect the probability of suicide. Barriers to such vigilance are considered. (105 refs.)
