Suicide and Unemployment: Predicting the Smoothed Trend and Yearly Fluctuations

This article extends previous studies of the association between unemployment & deviant behaviour. It develops & tests a model for the prediction of the suicide rate using economic variables including the unemployment rate. It is found that both the unemployment rate & the female participation rate in the labour force are powerful predictors of the suicide rate. (4 refs.)
