Gunshot Fatalities in Stockholm, Sweden With Special Reference to the use of Illegal Weapons

This study investigated the effect of an increase in illegally possessed & stolen firearms & handguns on the firearm fatality rate in the Stockholm, Sweden area during 1980-81 & 1990-91. There were 39 suicides in the first study period & 46 in the second. 99% of suicide victims were male. Rates of firearm-related suicides peaked in March & August. 20% of the firearm suicides during 1980-81 were committed with illegally possessed guns; in 1990-91, this figure rose to 30%. (13 refs)
