Murphy states that by assisting suicide, Kevorkian has challenged healthcare professionals. She argues that patients are so afraid of the impersonal end-of-life care now offered in hospitals that they seek escape by committing suicide. Murphy says that healthcare professionals should meet Kevorkian’s challenge by being able to assure patients that their pain can be controlled; that their treatment wishes will be respected; & that they will be left in control throughout their hospitalization.
