For the period 1950-1985, years with higher marriage & birth rates had lower suicide rates in both Italy & the USA. However, only the impact of birth rates in the USA reached statistical significance. The study provided weak support for Durkheim’s theory of suicide but indicated that the theory may have cross-cultural generality. (6 refs.)
