The authors review previous theoretical approaches to understanding adolescent suicide (i.e. Durkheim’s sociological theory, social learning theory, psychological theory, & family systems theory), & propose the utilization of human ecological theory. Factors associated with adolescent suicide at the organism (individual), microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, & macrosystem levels are examined. Finally, examples of prevention & intervention at each level are presented. (69 refs.)
