This Editorial summarizes the main points of the controversy surrounding reports that panic disorders are associated with greatly elevated risk for suicide attempts. It discusses panic disorders & panic attacks, & summarizes community studies & clinical studies examining panic disorder & nonfatal suicidal behaviour. It notes the central questions raised by these studies & draws tentative conclusions. Panic disorder & death by suicide is also discussed. (18 Refs.)
