This Letter to Editor notes that genital self-inflicted wounds are generally categorized as self-mutilating behavior or partial suicides but are not considered failed suicides. It presents 3 cases of Chinese men with isolated penile amputations. In each case the patient believed that by severing this source of life, death was inevitable. It is recommended that Chinese genital self-mutilators be considered failed suicides with genital injuries, rather than self-mutilators who may be suicidal.
