The author tries to account for the fact that older women have lower rates of both attempted & completed suicide than older men. In an attempt to explain the gender difference in elderly suicide, Canetto discusses theories that have been previously offered such as social & economic conditions, retirement & physical health factors. She suggests, as a possible explanation, that older women may have a more flexible & diverse coping style than older men.
