This article details a study of the demographic & clinical characteristics of elderly suicide attempters treated in a general hospital inpatient psychiatry unit. The relationship of age of onset of psychiatric illness to attempt is also examined. Results show the majority of elderly inpatient suicide attempters had a major depressive syndrome & a higher rate of prior suicide attempts. In addition, the psychopathology of late-onset illness is more likely to manifest in self-injurious behavior.
