This article notes that prior to the 1989 Romanian Revolution, scientists were not allowed to study suicide. Any investigation of the issue had to be done with great caution. The few studies that were undertaken are noted. It is estimated that the rate of suicide varies between 16 to 18 cases per 100,000 population. Suicide attempts are estimated at 6 times higher. Areas requiring research are noted as well as the fact that this would only be possible with international cooperation & assistance.
