1,858 depressed patients were analysed to evaluate the safety of tianeptine in the ambulatory treatment of depression. Only 1 patient completed suicide. At inclusion, 79% of the patients were considered to be extremely ill. By the end of the trial period, 66.5% of patients had shown improvement. With regard to the clinical tolerance of tianeptine, somatic complaints were rarely reported & adverse events necessitating premature termination of treatment were without clinical severity.
