In this letter to the editor, the author states that Hawton did not mention the relevance of prison suicides in his editorial on suicide among men (see SIEC #920840). Ilangaratne says that the suicide rate in prisons was much higher than among the general population during the 1980s, thus it is fair to assume that prison suicides contributed considerably to national statistics. It is suggested that different methods of screening all new prisoners might help reduce the suicide rate in prisons.
