Depression is associated with a risk of suicide 13-30 times greater than in the general population, & antidepressants are among the drugs frequently used in fatal overdose resulting in a dilemma for the clinician. There is evidence that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are of benefit in reducing suicidal thoughts. Data from controlled studies indicates that these drugs do not exacerbate suicidal ideation; on the contrary, they protect against the emergence of suicidal thoughts. (28 refs.)
