Approaches to Patient and Family Education With Affective Disorders

An overview of prevalency, types, effects & treatment of affective disorders, with particular emphasis on educational & psychoeducational interventions, is provided. Several models of psychoeducation are reviewed. Outcome data from several studies are also presented evidencing the positive impact of these interventions on patients & families. Special issues pertaining to affective disorders are discussed, including recurrence, suicide potential, & co-morbid substance abuse disorders. (54 refs.)
