The eventual outcome following a suicide attempt during a 5.5-year follow-up for 1,018 patients using suicide mortality as the outcome criterion was assessed. By the end of follow-up, 91 patients had died; 33 by suicide. 21% of the suicides took place within 1 month of the index suicide attempt; more than half took place within the first year. Risk factors included things such as male gender & advancing age, previous attempts & definite intent to die during the index suicide attempt. (22 refs.)
