In this editorial, the authors review risk factors for suicide, the clinical prediction of suicide & the effect of controlling access to the means of committing suicide. They believe that effective prevention strategies must be developed & that these should include: 1) responsible media coverage; & 2) societal debate on the consequences of the American constitutional right to bear arms & the appropriateness of such a right in modern society.
