The authors report on the possible effect of newspaper coverage of subway suicides in Vienna. The Austrian Association for Suicide Prevention created media guidelines which included printing only short reports or no reports at all. In 1988 no subway suicides were reported in the press. At the same time the number of suicides in the latter half of 1987 decreased abruptly. The authors feel this is evidence to support the hypothesis that press reports of suicides may trigger additional suicides.
